Temeraire's hatchling has come! (spoiler) by Kooskia Temeraire's hatchling has come! (spoiler) by Kooskia
(c) Naomi Novik (characters and story)
(c) Kooskia (fan-art).

After so much long time, the Temeraire series is getting an end! I am currently reading the last book (League of Dragons) and as soon as I FINALLY got up to the point where (spoiler).

Temeraire X Iskierka offspring hatch ... well...

In a way it's totally fitting xD  I admit I was so eager and interested that "switched off" my mind about speculations and just enjoyed the scene.

Such pretty first dialogue with their newborn baby dragon isn't it? Well... that's exactly what happens in the book xD  (dialogues of first panel are directly took from it).

Again... just totally fitting and perfect for the most "unpaired pairing" of dragons literature.

PLEASE, DON'T FAVE AND RUN AWAY !!!
IT'S NICE IF YOU STOP FOR FEW SECONDS AND LEAVE A SMALL COMMENT ^^
IT COULD BE NICE TO CHAT AND SPEAK X3

I stop looking for Temeraire art for two weeks and look what happens.

Spoilers!

"I almost EXPECTED Ning to reveal a decision to NOT pick a human partner."

She was related to Iskierka and was in Lien's care for a few days. How could she not want a king to manipulate. The only thing that could have been worse was to be related to Iskierka and Lien. What a scary dragon that would be.

Ning was adorable. I loved all her scenes. She is as rude as Iskierka but had the manners to at least be subtle about it.

"It is a shame you could not arrive in a far more timely manner."

"I'm afraid it is critical that I have something to eat. Immediately."  I'm not getting those quite right but you know what I mean. It was a little weird how much smarter she was than either of her parents after only a few weeks, but I guess she had a better education than Temeraire did.

My main disappointment was I was expecting the League of Dragons to be a United Nations of Dragons, which I thought would be quite neat. With Temeraire and Laurence at the center of this new dragon alliance.

I was sad not to see Mei, but I wasn't expecting it. Dragons don't seem to be very clingy of each other no matter how they obsess over their possessions and people.

Spoiler!!

(hehe Xp))

Concerning her need for a human partner. Well... it is true, but it is also a possibility (I thinks) her behavior and decision seems more a ... calculated move? rather than the actual NEED to have a mate on her side. And I agree and in a way she's lovely even if a bit puzzling.
I.. sort of feels she's a character that is up for MUCH action, and it would be awesome if Naomi will even work again on her. Maybe some stand alone book settled years later?

Yes yes, well... but in a way MUCH more mannered compared to Iskierka (to be fair... every LIVING BEING is more mannered than Iskierka lol). If you compare the dialogues, it is almost insane-cute how she POLITELY ask it lol.

Yep, I was expecting something like that. And as soon as I read Ning to not openly taking side I wondered "Well... maybe she's going to take the lead and say "none is worth" we will take care of ourself". Honestly I hope this could eventually lead to something like this, maybe not exactly a "dragon nation" but as you said some kind of parallel international league for dragons of different countries is a big possibility.

Yes, it is true for Mei. However it could have been nice to see more insight of the future of the Celestial dragons (but again... le'ts see if Naomi will work on it).
If there is one tiny disappointment it's that... ok. It is cool how dragons are described as uncaring for the offspring because it is indipendent after hatching but I ... expected/hoped to see something more than a simple relationship "dragon-to-dragon" (basically tollerance at best, hostility-competition at worse). It could have been nice to see if there was place for boasting? bragging?  Especially from Iskierka, knowing her personality,  to look at Ning and basically consider her existance  as a personal achievment, to have generated a powerful being. Totally selfish, but I wondered if this could have been a possibility given the possessive nature of dragons. It is true however that Iskierka is not exactly a "standard" for dragon, and even if she has such feelings they're quickly cast away by 1) little tollerance 2)dislike to see someone else powerful as (or more) than her.
Same thing for Temeraire, even if I like to think that (given his mind) he could have wondered and took self-esteem to have FINALLY an offspring, events quickly make him to consider Ning on potential threats and dangers for the ongoing campaign.

A pity we did not saw the whole thing in a more relaxed background.

It occurs to me that Mei might be the only civilized dragon to not have some sort of human companion, at least none was ever mentioned.

I heard there was a small chance of a Temeraire graphic novel / comic.

Edit: Wait, the dragon general didn't have one either. Nor did a lot of his staff it seemed. Or perhaps they were more of friends than constant companions. I mean, Lien wasn't always lingering around Napoleon.

I THINK to remember well that in China dragons are said to wait some time (and attend lessons?) before picking a choice for human mate, in the second book.
Ooh a graphic novel could be cool, even if in a way would change a bit the view of dragons and humans we have in our mind

Haha I've still to finish it, and I've yet to see certain things x3

However so far it's clear that NN tried to address multiple things, with hints/reference/mentions to almost everything of the series so far (she even "covered" the only spot left... dragons from India, with that small attack done by a couple of them against Laurence).

Ok, just finished it *breath heavily*

(SPOILER)

For once, wow... thinking back it's over it's a bit sad, even if generally speaking I enjoyed both the book and the ending as a whole. I think NN managed to finish it well, and tried her best to address plenty of things and stuff while could honestly not do EVERYTHING. I also enjoyed how she added a pair of additional secondary characters and some older characters saw less action to make space of them.

Now... speaking of some details I appreciated it's how she tried to "cover" also what was left of unexplained and never-seen before. We have a brief interesting scene with the Indian dragons almost killing Laurence that address clearly the defiance and the hatred attitude of the local indian empire resisting the British rule.
Also very interesting to see the "other" indians, at some points during one stage of the campaign when Allies are pushed back, Temeraire and Laurence meet briefly native american dragons that appears to have been recruited. Pity this received no other details and we are still not FULLY knowing how exactly are the USA in Temeraire world.

Coming to the conclusion of the conflict, I am satisfied. Especially considering I am ever been quite pro-Napoleon, it has been sad yes but also satisfactory to see how his downfall was indeed result of scheming and a double betrayals (the Tsawna and the timed-calculated move of the Empress and the Inca). As for difference in history appears clear that the French Empire is going to survive (while in History the appointment of Napoleon-II lasted very little) and there is not going to be a Bourbon restoration.

I appreciated both actions, thoughts and decisions from Temeraire and Laurence. And while NN really made clearly an effort to try address details, recall name and events and try to fill and complete subplots. Still few questions needs to be answered. (and I hope this could maybe be done in terms of short stories).

For once, I half-expected Jane to reveal of being pregnant by Laurence, because the lack of a child has been addressed and eventually could pose trouble for Temeraire himself. Still speaking of on this theme, it would be good to see some more explain exactly on the status of Celestial dragons, WHY the race was dwindling, and what could be done in future (pity to not see Mei back).

The only (partial) disappointment came from Ning.
In a way... (while reading) I almost EXPECTED Ning to reveal a decision to NOT pick a human partner, especially since she express not just the highest degree of intelligence from a dragon so far but also some interest for the general welfare of dragons. I almost hoped her to make some kind of final shocking statement and build up a "dragon nation" in central asia. Well... sadly I let out too many guessing and wondering, and is still nice how she make no commitmnent and say "eh we will see, I will go on China but maybe be back in France after some years".

The last book definitely turned out to be great :D I was kinda sad that the series as a whole didn´t have more Iskierka in it. But well ... you can´t have everything q_q

After I finished reading the last book, I even bought the audiobooks to burn through them AGAIN on my way to work :-)
It´s quite weird though how different the content is to me on the audiobook . The pronunciation creates a completely different tone for the whole story.
When I was reading, it actually had that deep bitter-sweet / dark undertone for me (which I somewhat prefer :P ) instead of the laid-back, sarcastic tone of the audiobook-voice.

I´m kinda sad about the huge lack of fanart after the series finished though ... This comic totally made my day, thanks :D

Considering some time has passed from each of the last book, I fear much of the original readers/artists could have missed the actual book release. Or maybe postponed reading or sadly busy with other stuff. I think poking some of them and ask "Hey, just to know, you read the last book?".
For example I think there are THREE arts of the hatchling yet around on DA o,o I could be wrong but still very few in number.

Should finish the book in few days however Xd
And totally glad you enjoyed it! It was like... years I waited to see the outcome of TemeraireXIskierka mating xD (and I did already other comics of them lol Xd just type "Temeraire" in the  search for my gallery if you're curious ^^)
