After some time... a new "ship's art" ^^
And again i've decided to show a not-much-known naval battle involving a communist country.

This one it's very interesting!
Battle of Hainan, March-May 1950.

The Nationalists planned to keep Hainan (the large island close to Vietnam) as a "second-Taiwan".

At this time, the People Liberation Army Navy had not new modern vessels while the nationalist received ex-military warships from USA.

However the PLA used before this clash, large numbers of ex-civilians junks (from large vessels, to small boats with few men on it) in number of thousends to landing operations.

But this time the Nationalist Navy had prepared a naval block of warship.... communist chineses were awere of this and armed a number of larger junks with mountain's guns.

The battle was actually one of the few (i can't remeber/find others) when a eastern junks flottilla defeated a modern western-style groups of metallic ships.

The shells of the nationalist ships opened large holes on the junks, but didn't exploded because they were planned to cause damages at other metallic warships: instead the communist's junks scored direct hits and damages at the nationalist flagship, the ex-american destroyer Taiping, that was heavily damaged and forced to escape.

The Nationalist fleet was forced to retreat with heavy damages without inflicting great ones to the communists, the landing operation was done and Hainan was freed (during the battles, communist suffered 4,500 causalities, while nationalists lost 33,000 men. )

(the Taiping will not survive at the conflict, because will be later torpedoed and sunk by communist soviet-made motor torpedo boats)

Comments and opinions are extremely welcome ^^

Just another example of how it's not the technology or resources that win battles, but the knowledge and skill to effectively use it.
